Thornton Trail Winds Recreation Center

Located within Trail Winds Park and Open Space, the Trail Winds Recreation Center serves as a welcoming gateway to the park and a year-round destination for recreation, fitness, education, and community engagement. Designed to serve residents of all ages, the facility brings together a wide variety of programs and amenities under one roof, creating a central gathering place for the growing community.

The recreation center features a diverse mix of spaces that support active lifestyles, social interaction, and lifelong learning. Amenities include a lounge and event space, multipurpose rooms, warming kitchen, preschool facilities, exercise studios, gymnasium, climbing wall, and an elevated indoor running track. Aquatic offerings include a lap pool, leisure pool, lazy river, and water slides, providing recreational opportunities for users of all ages and abilities. The facility also includes administrative offices and support spaces that enable efficient operation of its extensive programming.

Community enthusiasm for the project was evident from the start, with more than 1,000 people attending the facility’s opening day. The center quickly established itself as a key community asset, supporting more than 100 programs that promote health, wellness, recreation, and social connection.

Delivering the project required careful planning and coordination due to several complex construction challenges. Significant efforts were devoted to expansive soil mitigation, while the natatorium systems were executed through a design-build mechanical, electrical, and plumbing approach to ensure performance, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Extensive preconstruction planning involving facility operators and trade partners helped align construction activities with the operational needs of the future facility.

The result is a dynamic recreation center that enhances access to wellness, education, and recreation while serving as a focal point for community life and activity within Trail Winds Park and Open Space.
