Steamboat Ski Area Base Improvements

Transforming the heart of the resort into a year-round destination for recreation, entertainment, and community gathering.

The redevelopment of Gondola Square reimagined the arrival experience at Steamboat Resort, transforming a primarily seasonal base area into a vibrant, amenity-rich destination designed to serve guests throughout the year. As a key component of the resort’s broader expansion efforts, the project enhanced the guest experience through new public spaces, expanded amenities, and modern infrastructure that support both winter and summer activities.

The redevelopment included extensive site improvements, beginning with the relocation of critical infrastructure to accommodate future growth and operational needs. Existing structures were carefully demolished and replaced with new facilities and public amenities designed to create a more welcoming, connected, and engaging environment for visitors.

The overall improvement plan, including on-mountain and base area enhancements, was completed during the off-seasons of 2021 through 2023. The project consisted of the following improvements:

Demolition of the existing three-story Gondola Building, and after the relocation of the gondola loading area up the mountain.
A new one-story, 24,212-square-foot structure located below the Plaza and fronting the adjacent Promenade.
A new ice rink is located above the Promenade Building.
Demolition and redevelopment of the existing stage structure.
Landscape, lighting, and public amenity improvements are located throughout the Plaza.
Potential future Plaza-facing buildings to create additional amenities.
All applicable structures received LEED certification.

With the expansion of 650 acres of terrain, Steamboat became Colorado’s second-largest ski area. This added terrain provides Alterra Mountain Company the opportunity to provide a world-class guest experience that matches the resort’s long-recognized industry excellence.
