The museum provides a purpose-built environment that supports both the study and public appreciation of one of the world’s most significant single-artist collections.
Housing approximately 2,400 works spanning Clyfford Still’s career, the museum contains one of the most comprehensive collections dedicated to a single artist anywhere in the world. The building’s galleries and support spaces were carefully designed to create intimate, contemplative environments that enhance visitors’ engagement with the artwork while supporting the museum’s long-term preservation goals.
Architecturally, the museum is conceived as a monolithic form emerging from the earth — a sculptural mass of concrete shaped by natural light. Carefully integrated daylighting strategies allow the building itself to become a source of illumination, creating a unique relationship between the architecture and the art it houses. The structure’s simplicity, materiality, and craftsmanship reinforce the timeless nature of Still’s work while providing a distinctive cultural landmark for the community.
Through meticulous planning, close collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to quality, the project team delivered a true concrete jewel box — a building that stands as a work of art in its own right, enriching the visitor experience and serving as a fitting home for Clyfford Still’s extraordinary legacy.
