Read More →Completed in Fall 2021, the new Safe Passage facility in Colorado Springs was developed to strengthen the organization’s mission of providing comprehensive support and advocacy for children affected by abuse. Through the renovation of an existing building, the project created a centralized, collaborative environment where multiple agencies can work together to deliver coordinated care, investigative services, medical support, and family resources.
The renovated facility was designed around a shared-service model that brings together key community partners while providing each organization with dedicated operational space. Occupants include Safe Passage, the Colorado Springs Police Department, a medical clinic, KidPower, The Family Health Center, and the Department of Human Services. By housing these organizations within a single facility, families can access critical services in one location, reducing barriers to care and creating a more supportive experience during difficult circumstances.
The project was delivered through a collaborative design-build process that required close coordination among numerous stakeholders. A fast-track schedule and streamlined communication approach enabled the team to efficiently align the needs of multiple agencies while maintaining project momentum and delivering a facility tailored to the unique requirements of each organization.
In addition to dedicated offices and program areas, the facility includes shared spaces that encourage collaboration and coordination among service providers. This integrated environment enhances communication between agencies and helps ensure that children and families receive the comprehensive support they need throughout the healing process.
Safe Passage serves as a vital resource within the community, acting as a single point of contact for medical, investigative, and legal services related to child abuse cases. The facility was designed to support this mission by creating a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment focused on care, recovery, and advocacy.
The project also reflects Saunders’ commitment to community impact through its Building Confidence in Kids (BCiK) initiative, which partnered with Safe Passage to further support the organization’s mission throughout the project.
The result is a thoughtfully designed community resource center that improves access to critical services, strengthens interagency collaboration, and provides a compassionate environment dedicated to helping children and families move forward with confidence and support.
The project received the 2022 Best Project Award of Merit for Small Project from Engineering News-Record (ENR) Mountain States.
