To better serve the growing needs of Adams County’s animal population and the community members who support them, a new state-of-the-art animal shelter and adoption center was developed to replace the former shelter facility. Designed to provide enhanced care for animals while creating a welcoming experience for visitors, the new Riverdale Animal Shelter establishes a modern standard for animal welfare services in the region.

Located at the south end of Riverdale Park in Brighton, Colorado, the 43,000-square-foot facility significantly expands the county’s ability to care for and place animals. The shelter includes modern kennel accommodations for dogs, cats, and small mammals, providing safer, more comfortable, and less stressful temporary housing while animals await adoption or reunification with their owners.

A primary focus of the design was creating an environment that supports animal health and well-being. High-performance air treatment systems, noise-control materials, and thoughtfully designed housing areas help reduce stress and improve overall comfort for the animals in the facility. These features contribute to a healthier environment and improve adoption outcomes.

The shelter also enhances services available to the public through an expanded veterinary clinic, private adoption rooms, a dedicated lost-and-found lobby, and large multipurpose spaces that support educational programs and community events. Expanded parking and improved visitor amenities make the facility more accessible and welcoming for families, volunteers, and prospective adopters.

By combining advanced animal care facilities with community-focused spaces, the project creates a destination that supports adoption, education, and responsible pet ownership while strengthening the county’s ability to provide essential animal services.

The result is a modern, compassionate shelter designed to improve the lives of both animals and people, providing a safe temporary home for thousands of animals each year while fostering stronger connections between pets and the community they serve.
