Prairie View High School Commons Addition

Creating a safer, more welcoming campus environment through enhanced student spaces and improved circulation.

Saunders completed a comprehensive expansion and renovation of Prairie View High School’s commons area to enhance the safety, functionality, and overall experience of the school’s main entrance. The project was designed to improve campus circulation, strengthen security measures, and create additional gathering spaces that better support students throughout the school day.

A key component of the project was the construction of a new main entrance and secure vestibule, providing a more controlled and welcoming point of access for students, staff, and visitors. Additional security enhancements included a dedicated security office, workspace for the school resource officer, and improved visitor management features that support a safer campus environment.

The expanded commons area creates flexible space for students to eat lunch, study, collaborate, and socialize outside of the classroom. Designed as a multi-purpose indoor gathering area, the space provides comfortable seating and a safe, climate-controlled environment that supports both structured and informal student activities throughout the day.

The project also included the addition of new restroom facilities and significant improvements to the exterior courtyard. The existing courtyard was demolished and replaced with a redesigned outdoor space that serves as an inviting front door to the school while improving pedestrian circulation and directing foot traffic more effectively throughout the campus.

Mechanical upgrades further enhanced the facility’s performance and occupant comfort. The main gymnasium received a new air handling unit along with 12 destratification fans to improve air circulation and temperature consistency. The auxiliary gymnasium was also upgraded with two new exhaust fans, enhancing ventilation and overall comfort for students, athletes, and spectators.

Through thoughtful planning and targeted improvements, the project successfully modernized key areas of the campus while addressing safety, operational, and student experience goals.

The result is a more secure, welcoming, and functional school environment that supports student engagement, improves campus flow, and enhances the overall experience for the Prairie View High School community.
