Transforming a historic landmark into a one-of-a-kind destination for craftsmanship, hospitality, and community....
Read More →Phelps Memorial Health Center (PMHC) has served the Holdrege, Nebraska community since 1968 as a private, non-profit critical access hospital dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare close to home. As the needs of the community evolved, the hospital recognized the need for additional space and enhanced facilities to continue providing exceptional patient care and expanded medical services throughout the region.
Saunders was selected as the construction manager/general contractor for a comprehensive 42,000-square-foot expansion and renovation designed to modernize the campus and support future growth. The project centered on a significant addition to the existing hospital, providing approximately 35,000 square feet of new construction while allowing the facility to continue serving patients throughout the construction process.
The expansion includes approximately 23,500 square feet on the first floor, creating new space for healthcare services, patient care functions, and operational support areas. An additional 9,500 square feet of shell space was constructed on the second floor, providing flexibility for future growth and allowing the hospital to adapt to changing healthcare demands and community needs over time.
As a critical access hospital serving a largely rural population, maintaining local access to quality healthcare was a primary driver behind the project. The expansion strengthens PMHC’s ability to deliver comprehensive medical services while creating a more efficient and modern environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.
Through careful planning, collaboration, and phased execution, the project team delivered infrastructure that supports the hospital’s long-term mission of providing exceptional care close to home. The result is a modernized healthcare facility positioned to meet the needs of the Holdrege community and surrounding region for years to come, ensuring residents continue to have access to high-quality medical services without leaving their community.
