Louisville Recreation and Senior Center & Memory Square Pool

Transforming a beloved community destination while keeping recreation, wellness, and senior services accessible throughout construction.

The Louisville Recreation and Senior Center underwent a comprehensive 130,000-square-foot renovation and expansion designed to enhance recreational opportunities, modernize aging facilities, and better serve residents of all ages. Completed while the facility remained fully operational, the project required careful phasing, continuous communication, and close coordination with staff to minimize disruptions and maintain access to critical community services.

The renovation introduced a wide range of new and expanded amenities, including fitness rooms, training and classroom spaces, a turf gymnasium, child care facilities, an open weights area, a renovated senior center, and a modernized lobby and entry experience. These improvements created a more welcoming, flexible, and user-focused environment that supports recreation, wellness, education, and community engagement.

A major component of the project focused on aquatics. The facility received two new pools, including a lap pool and a zero-entry leisure pool featuring a lazy river, water slide, and interactive play elements. New family locker rooms further enhanced the user experience and improved accessibility for visitors of all ages.

Building systems were comprehensively upgraded through the installation of new mechanical, lighting, and specialty systems designed to improve comfort, efficiency, and long-term facility performance. Exterior enhancements included an expansive outdoor patio, additional parking, new landscaping, and an outdoor aquatics park that expanded recreational opportunities beyond the building itself.

Throughout construction, the recreation center remained open and operational. The project team maintained flexibility and prioritized proactive communication, allowing staff to plan around construction activities and continue serving the community with minimal interruption.

In addition to the recreation center improvements, the project included significant upgrades to the nearby Memory Square Pool. Enhancements featured a new pool house, a zero-entry children’s pool, and new cabanas and shade structures that improved comfort and usability for families and visitors.

The result is a revitalized recreation and senior center that provides expanded amenities, enhanced aquatics facilities, and modern community spaces while continuing to serve as a cornerstone of health, wellness, and recreation for Louisville residents.
