Transforming a historic landmark into a one-of-a-kind destination for craftsmanship, hospitality, and community....
Read More →Made possible through funding from the Colorado Department of Education’s Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) program, this 102,000-square-foot project transformed educational facilities within the Sheridan School District while addressing long-standing maintenance challenges and supporting a modern approach to learning. As Saunders’ third project for the district, the development reflects a continued commitment to creating high-quality educational environments that serve students, educators, and the broader community.
The project replaced aging facilities with a new campus designed around 21st-century learning principles, providing students with a safe, welcoming, and flexible educational environment while reducing long-term maintenance and operational costs. Students and teachers relocated from the former Fort Logan Elementary School, while the existing Sheridan Middle School was repurposed to house a new Early Childhood Center and district administrative offices.
The new campus includes dedicated academic wings for grades 3–5 and grades 6–8, along with the renovation of the existing middle school west wing to support early childhood education programs. These learning environments are connected by a central shared core that serves as the heart of the campus and promotes interaction among students and staff.
Shared amenities include a gymnasium, art classrooms, and a cafeteria, providing spaces that support both academic and extracurricular activities. Comprehensive site improvements included new parking areas, a dedicated bus loop, playground facilities, and physical education and athletic fields that enhance the overall student experience.
The result is a cohesive educational campus that supports students across multiple stages of learning, strengthens district resources, and provides a durable, future-focused facility designed to serve the Sheridan community for years to come.
This project received LEED Gold Certification in 2014.
