Broomfield Wastewater Treatment Facility

Expanding critical environmental infrastructure to support a growing community and higher water quality standards.

The Broomfield Wastewater Treatment Facility Laboratory and Administration Building expansion was a critical investment in the City and County of Broomfield’s environmental infrastructure, providing the space, technology, and resources necessary to meet increasing regulatory requirements and support a rapidly growing population. The project included a 6,556-square-foot addition and a 4,714-square-foot renovation, more than doubling the capacity of the facility’s laboratory and administrative operations.

The project was delivered in two phases to maintain continuous operations. Phase One focused on constructing the addition, which included a significantly expanded main laboratory, multiple specialty lab spaces, administrative offices, a conference room, employee locker rooms, restrooms, an enlarged break room, and a new public entrance and lobby. These enhancements provided staff with modern, efficient workspaces designed to support the facility’s expanding operational needs.

Phase Two involved a comprehensive renovation of the existing building, including upgrades to office areas and the original laboratory spaces. Together, the two phases created a cohesive and modernized facility capable of supporting current operations while accommodating future growth.

As part of the Environmental Services Division, the laboratory plays a vital role in protecting public health and environmental quality. The facility provides analytical testing for wastewater treatment, reclaimed water, industrial pretreatment, and stormwater management programs. Equipped to analyze nearly 40 different substances, including nitrates, ammonia, and numerous metals, the laboratory serves as a critical component of the region’s water quality management system.

The expansion addressed a long-standing need for additional space and resources. Although funding efforts for the project began in 2003, construction did not commence until 2016. During that time, Broomfield’s population more than doubled, placing increased demands on the wastewater treatment system. While the treatment facility itself underwent several upgrades over the years, the laboratory and administration building remained largely unchanged despite significant growth in staffing and operational requirements.

The modernized facility now provides staff with advanced laboratory equipment and expanded analytical capabilities that improve efficiency, accuracy, and regulatory compliance. These enhancements enable the team to better monitor and evaluate water quality, ensuring that treated water released into the environment continues to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards.

The result is a forward-looking facility that strengthens Broomfield’s ability to protect its water resources, support community growth, and maintain the highest standards of environmental stewardship for years to come.
