Veterans Day — Honoring All Who Have Served

“We can’t all be heroes; someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.”  — Roy Rogers

On Nov. 11, the United States of America observes Veterans Day. But today and every day, Saunders recognizes our U.S. Military Veterans and we thank them for their service to our Nation. Saunders employs 22 veterans, who each bring a unique set of skills and experience to our company.

Veterans Day is an important day to say “thank you,” as we show appreciation to members of our military for their contributions and sacrifice.

History of Veterans DayWhen first recognized as Armistice Day, it was the day that marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918. Therefore, today, we continue to celebrate Veterans Day with its original tie to November 11.

Honoring Veterans by Doing What We Do Best — BuildingThe formerly named Lincoln Park, located at Colfax and Broadway, between Civic Center Park and the Colorado State Capitol, has been officially renamed as Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park — in which Saunders has completed two memorials, with another one currently under construction.

Colorado Veterans Monument - Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park:Originally dedicated on Veterans Day in 1990, the Colorado tribute to the Veterans monument is a tribute for the living and a memorial to the fallen. Built from sandstone, the tower represents the image of strength while the beacon atop marks a special place for lasting awareness and memory. Saunders has been keeping up with maintenance on the monument in Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park every year since.

Colorado Fallen Heroes Memorial – Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park:In 2021, Saunders completed the Colorado Fallen Heroes Memorial, which was dedicated on Veterans Day 2021, and stands alongside the original monument, paying tribute to each Colorado veteran who has fallen in the service of our country. Saunders’ project team built this memorial twice, as days before the project was turned over, protests in Denver led to major damage and defacement to the memorial

General Rose Monument – Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park:Saunders is currently underway with the General Rose Monument project in Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park, preparing the site’s hardscape and landscaping for installation of a bronze statue commemorating U.S. Army Major General Maurice Rose. Rose, who grew up in Denver, was one of the highest-ranking U.S. servicemen killed by enemy fire in WWII.

Tuskegee Airmen Red Tails Monument – U.S. Air Force Academy: Saunders Norwood was recently awarded the Tuskegee Airmen Red Tails Monument at the General Benjamin O. Davis Airfield on the U.S. Air Force Academy campus in Colorado Springs. General Benjamin O. Davis was the first commander of the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII. This monument will stand in memoriam of this unit and include a replica of the North American P-51D Mustang that was famously flown by these heroic airmen. To tie the past to the present, the monument will also include the new advanced trainer aircraft for the US Air Force — the Boeing T-7 Red Hawk — which is named to commemorate the Tuskegee Airmen.

Thank you, Veterans!
